1. Norte Fire Forces Mass Evacuations in South Orange County

A fast-moving wildfire driven by strong Santa Ana winds, dry brush and high heat broke out just after 11:30 a.m. Friday in the San Clemente area, south of San Juan Capistrano. The Norte Fire had burned about 465 acres by Friday afternoon, according to the governor's office, and nearly 13,000 people and about 4,000 homes were under evacuation orders or warnings. Mandatory orders covered San Juan Capistrano Zones 4, 5 and 10 and San Clemente Zones 12 and 13. Television footage showed several homes burning in San Juan Capistrano; no official damage count had been released, and no injuries were reported. Cal Fire listed the fire at 0% containment in the early afternoon. FEMA approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant to help cover firefighting costs, and the cause is under investigation. Residents should follow the Orange County Fire Authority and Genasys Protect for the latest evacuation zones.

2. Huntington Beach Police Union Spends Against Council Incumbents

The Huntington Beach Police Officers Association has spent more than $100,000 on City Council races, according to campaign disclosures reviewed by Voice of OC. Its political action committee spent about $16,000 each opposing Mayor Casey McKeon and Councilman Pat Burns, who voted against police contracts with raises of nearly 18% over three years, and more than $17,000 supporting Councilman Andrew Gruel, who voted for them. The PAC is also backing challengers Brian Burley, Taryn Palumbo and Erin Spivey.

3. South County Battery Storage Plan Withdrawn After Wildfire Fears

The company behind a controversial battery storage facility in South Orange County withdrew its application after residents raised concerns about wildfire risk, Voice of OC reported — a debate made more pointed by Friday's fire.

4. Tustin Police to Get Access to School Camera Feeds

Tustin police will gain access to camera feeds from local public schools, with officials saying use will be limited to emergencies, according to Voice of OC.
