One person was killed and eight others injured in a 10-vehicle crash on the southbound 5 freeway at Alton Parkway in Irvine on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.
A woman killed in chain-reaction crashes that involved 10 vehicles on the southbound I-5 freeway early Thursday, Aug. 23 has been identified by the Orange County coroner as a 25-year-old San Diego area resident.
Maria Osuna of National City was killed in the pile-up that authorities believe was set off by a suspected drunken driver, who was arrested.
A total of eight people, including three children, were hurt in the wreckage near the Alton Parkway exit.
The injured children were ages 11, 10 and six months. The six-month old was in the vehicle with the 25-year-old woman who died.
Osuna survived the initial crash, but CHP officials said she apparently unbuckled her seat belt to remove her infant son from the rear seat of her Eclipse, which was then struck from behind by a van, killing her and injuring the boy.
When firefighters responded at about 1:30 a.m., they found 10 vehicles and multiple victims. The first crash was between a Dodge Challenger, driven by the suspect, and a Toyota Prius, Olivera said.
According to the CHP incident log, the Dodge had its hazard lights on and was speeding prior to the crash. Another crash occurred just minutes after the initial one in the same spot.
Irving Abel Aguilar-Calixto, 22, of Las Vegas was driving a gray Dodge Challenger on the southbound 5 Freeway just north of the 405 Freeway around 1:30 a.m. when he "was involved in a two vehicle DUI collision," the CHP arrest report said.
