NASA says it completed a contract modification to have SpaceX use the Starship lander vehicle it is developing to transport astronauts to the surface of the moon on the fourth planned Artemis mission. The space agency previously said it would exercise an option to award the mission to the Elon Musk-led company while it opened up a separate bidding opportunity for a second lander developed by another firm. Last year, NASA gave SpaceX a $2.9B contract to use Starship on an uncrewed test mission for the second Artemis mission, planned for 2024, and a trip to the surface of the moon in 2025. SpaceX hasn't yet conducted an orbital flight test of Starship and NASA plans to try to launch vehicles for Artemis on a major test launch early Wednesday.
