UC Irvine officials on Saturday, March 21 said a resident living in the university’s graduate student housing tested positive for the coronavirus.

In a tweet, UCI Police said the resident is isolated. The risk of others contacting the virus from the resident is low, the department said. The resident, who is not a student, is believed to be the first living in UC Irvine’s student housing to have tested positive for the coronavirus.

On March 10, UCI officials announced final exams and most classes will be held remotely to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Graduation ceremonies scheduled for June 12-15 have been canceled as a precaution, although officials are exploring alternatives such as a virtual commencement.

UCI Vice Chancellor for Research Pramod Khargonekar also announced that researchers must stop all non-critical research that cannot be done at home.
