21 DAYS OF PRAYER // DAY 10

A Prayer of Community

com·mu·ni·ty

“people (or other beings) living in a particular area or who are considered a unit due to their common interests or other common or unifying qualities”

Ecclesiastes 4:9

9 Two are better than one,

because they have a good return for their labor:

“We have all known the long loneliness, and we have found that the answer is community.”

― Dorothy Day

God has designed us to be in community with him and with others, knowing that two really are better than one. Too often, we labor alone for a return that seems like it will never come. We may pour into a project at home or at work that yields dismal results because there is simply more to the project than we can fully accomplish by ourselves. But as with anything that is good, it takes a number of elements to yield a successful result.

There is truth in this equation:
Community = relationships + time + mission + ordeal

I heard a story about a mom who was teaching her son how to bake. Baking takes time, but this young man was in a hurry. On his first try at making cupcakes, he threw all the ingredients into a bowl and quickly stirred them together, leaving chunks of unmixed ingredients. He took the cupcakes out of the oven too soon. The result was inconsistent cupcakes: some too sweet, some too salty, some that were dry and powdery, and some that were so moist they were dripping; basically, they were not edible. You see, he didn’t take the time necessary to get all the flavors mixed in together, nor did he allow enough heat to cook them properly.

Like baking, forming community takes time, the heat of an ordeal, and a common mission. Some of our relationships are too sweet (no truth), too salty (no grace), too dry and powdery (they just seem to blow away), or too moist to hold onto (you can’t count on them). When that happens, remember that two are still better than one, and that more time, heat, and a common challenge to overcome may be the missing ingredients.

 Pray

  • Meditate on the words “two are better than one,” replacing the word “two” with your name and someone in your community, saying “ _______________ and I are better together.” As you continue to meditate, switch out the names of others in your community, praying for those individuals as you go.
  • Pray that God would bring you into community with a small group of friends, or if you are already in a small group, that God would reveal someone in your life who may need an invitation into your existing group. Which ingredient (time, mission or ordeal) would be most necessary to make your group a more healthy community for each other and for someone new? Ask God to help you add that missing ingredient.
  • Thank God for those in our church community who help make you a better version of you.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:1 ~ 3)

God A holy (without sin), spiritual being, all-knowing, everywhere present, eternally existent in three distinct personalities – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit – one God (Exodus 3:14-15, John 4:24, Matthew 28:19, John 1:1-2).

Jesus Christ Jesus became “God in the flesh.” He was born through the miracle of a virgin birth, lived a sinless life, was crucified and died a physical death as atonement for our sins, and was physically resurrected from the grave. (Matthew 1:18-25, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8) He will return in bodily form as Lord of the universe, to gather his followers and judge those who have rejected him (Acts 1:9-11, Hebrews 9:27-28).

The Holy Spirit Lives within those who believe in Jesus Christ as Comforter and Advocate, and helps us become more like Jesus in thought, word, actions, and character (John 16:5-15).

Sin Men and women were created in the image of God but are now separated from God by sin (Romans 5:12-21).

Salvation Faith (belief and trust) in Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross is the only way to be reconciled with God (Acts 4:8-12). Salvation cannot be earned; it is offered through Jesus based on grace, not merit. What we couldn’t do for ourselves (reconcile with God), Jesus did through his death on the cross (Ephesians 2:8-9). God lovingly offers salvation to every person, and every person has the freedom to accept or reject this gift at any time (John 3:16-18). Faith requires repentance (conforming our lifestyle to Christ’s), and results in obedience. Baptism by immersion demonstrates a pledge of our willingness to live for Him (Acts 8:26-38, Romans 6:1-4).

The Bible The Bible is inspired by God and is therefore without error or contradiction, and is the sole authority for faith and practice. All our beliefs come from the Bible (2 Timothy 3:15-16, 2 Peter 3:15-16).

The Church The Church of Jesus Christ is not limited to any one institution or denomination; it consists of all who have trusted Jesus Christ for the redemption of their sins. Eastside is therefore but one part of the greater Church (1 Corinthians 12:12-17).
