Almost a third of U.S. apartment tenants failed to pay their rent on time this month, according to a new survey by the National Multifamily Housing Council. It’s the first indicator of how much distress renters and landlords face in the months ahead due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Thirty-one percent of apartment households failed to pay any of their rent as of April 5, according to the “NMHC Rent Payment Tracker,” which aggregated data from several of the nation’s top apartment data firms.

That compares with 19% who had failed to make any payments as of March 5 and 17% failing to pay up by April 5, 2019.

The new payment tracker reflects data from 13.4 million apartments across the country.
