Laguna Beach Declares Emergency as Coastal Erosion Worsens

Laguna Beach declared a local state of emergency Thursday as leftover swell from former Hurricane Marie continued stripping sand from the coastline and damaging seawalls. Six oceanfront homes on Ocean Way and Lagunita Drive were yellow-tagged, part of the Aliso Beach parking lot failed, and several beaches — including the south end of Lagunita Beach, Pearl Street Beach and the Christmas Cove footpath — were closed. "Most of us have never seen this much sand leave our beaches at once," City Manager Dave Kiff said. Just south in Dana Point, nine homes along Beach Street have now been red-tagged and seven more yellow-tagged, and Orange County has activated its Emergency Operations Center to help coordinate sand replacement, debris removal and expedited repair permits along the affected shoreline.

Garden Grove Police Run DUI and Commercial-License Checkpoint

Garden Grove police conducted a DUI and commercial driver's license checkpoint Friday night, targeting corridors with a history of impaired-driving crashes such as Brookhurst & Lampson and Harbor & Westminster. The federally funded operation comes as Orange County records roughly 60 to 70 DUI-related fatalities a year, a toll officials say has worsened with rising alcohol, marijuana and polysubstance impairment.

Orange County Marks the 25th Anniversary of September 11

Communities across Orange County held tributes marking 25 years since the September 11 attacks. Orange's "Flags Over Orange" ceremony at City Hall on Friday evening featured the El Modena High School choir and Orange High School's MCJROTC, with 25 flags raised alongside one large flag hoisted by a Fire Department ladder truck. Santa Ana's Fairhaven Memorial Park is set to hold a 2,100-step memorial stair climb Saturday morning honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters killed in the attacks, and Tustin held its own remembrance at Fire Station 37.

Santa Ana is preparing for its Fiestas Patrias festival, one of Orange County's largest cultural celebrations, with street closures downtown already underway ahead of a two-day festival Saturday and Sunday capped by Sunday's parade down Main Street from 17th to 5th Street. The free, family-friendly event is set to include live music, food vendors, carnival rides and a 21-and-over beer garden, with city officials noting Santa Ana's sanctuary-city policies as festivalgoers gather downtown.
