Market Watch – September 25, 2026

Indices close higher: The S&P 500 closed at 7,744.64, up 0.53%; the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,791.56, up 0.86%; and the Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,108.19, up 0.63%, with all three major indices advancing Friday despite a rocky week for bonds.

Meta leads the gainers: Meta Platforms extended its rally, up roughly 16% for the week and about 36% for September, after unveiling its new "Muse" AI agent, which analysts say is being adopted faster than almost anything since ChatGPT's launch.

Bond yields were the day's bigger story: The 10-year Treasury yield climbed as high as roughly 5.17%, one of its highest levels in nearly two decades, as an Iran-linked energy shock pushed diesel to about $6.50 a gallon and gasoline to roughly $4.50, reviving fears that the Federal Reserve could be forced toward higher rates rather than cuts.

Oil eased late in the session: Crude prices pulled back, with WTI slipping to around $94 a barrel and Brent to about $99, on reports that the U.S. and Iran were discussing a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Costco's mixed reaction: Costco's quarterly results beat expectations (EPS of $6.75 and revenue of $95.72 billion, with comparable sales up 9.4%), but its shares still fell about 0.9% after investors flagged that a one-time tariff-refund benefit flattered the headline numbers.

Consumer mood softened: The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index slipped to a four-month low of 48.1, weighed down by high gas prices, tariff concerns and rising borrowing costs.

The bigger picture: Markets largely shrugged off the surge in yields — Wall Street is still projecting roughly 29% S&P 500 earnings growth for the third quarter, and JPMorgan has argued valuations can hold up even with yields near 5% as long as earnings stay strong. President Xi Jinping's Washington visit wrapped up without a major trade breakthrough, though the two sides did extend their tariff truce by two months.
