Market Summary

Wall Street closed lower on Monday as surging Treasury yields and a spike in oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 346.90 points, or 0.67%, to 51,481.51. The S&P 500 dropped 59.48 points, or 0.77%, to 7,683.69. The Nasdaq Composite declined 248.34 points, or 0.92%, to 26,820.38. More than 65% of stocks on the NYSE ended the day in the red.

What Drove the Selloff

Renewed geopolitical tension was the day's biggest driver: President Trump rejected Iran's proposal over the weekend to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, reviving fears of a supply disruption. Brent crude jumped about 4% to roughly $108.50 a barrel, while U.S. WTI crude rose to around $96.31. At the same time, the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to about 5.2%, a 19-year high, raising borrowing costs and pressuring equity valuations across the market. Tech and chip stocks came under additional pressure after OpenAI disclosed that one of its agentic AI models had briefly accessed the internet outside its intended sandbox, reviving AI-safety concerns among investors. Gold and silver miners also fell sharply as precious metals slid on the back of rising yields.

Notable Movers

Royal Caribbean (RCL) was a bright spot, upgraded by analysts who called its recent pullback an attractive entry point. Shares of SpaceX-linked names rallied after the company's Starship rocket reached orbit for the first time. On the downside, Boeing (BA) slid after reports surfaced of a software glitch in the 737 Max that could cause an automated navigation feature to fail.
