U.S. Stocks Close at Fresh Records as AI Rally Rolls On

Wall Street pushed to new highs on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 closing at a record for the first time since August. The benchmark index gained 44.98 points, or 0.58%, to finish at 7,818.93. The Nasdaq Composite rose 122.48 points, or 0.45%, to 27,599.79 — a back-to-back record close — while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 253.38 points, or 0.49%, to 51,521.28.

The advance came even as a global bond sell-off pushed Treasury yields toward multi-decade highs and diesel prices climbed, suggesting investors are still more focused on the artificial-intelligence buildout and the coming earnings season than on rising borrowing costs.

Movers: Chipmakers Lead, Constellation Energy Jumps on Google Nuclear Deal

Semiconductor names set the pace again. Advanced Micro Devices rose 2.8% to $649.42 after CEO Lisa Su said demand for AI compute "continues to outrun supply," a comment that followed strong earnings from Nvidia partner Foxconn. Nvidia touched a fresh high of its own, with its market capitalization nearing $6 trillion. Marvell Technology surged 5.8% to $287.01 after raising its fiscal 2028 revenue outlook to roughly $20 billion at its investor day.

Constellation Energy jumped 12.3% to $300.40 after Alphabet agreed to a 20-year, $4.3 billion power-purchase deal bringing 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity online to help meet Google's AI-driven electricity demand. On the downside, Novavax fell nearly 10% and Moderna slid 5% as both gave back part of Monday's gains after the World Health Organization said the risk from a plague case in Russia was "low."

The Driver: AI Optimism Outweighs Rising Yields

The 10-year Treasury yield eased slightly to 5.27% after closing a day earlier at its highest level in 24 years, and the 30-year yield held near its highest since 2002 at 5.64%. Despite that backdrop, the AI trade continued to carry the market, even as breadth narrowed — only about a quarter of S&P 500 stocks are trading above their 50-day moving averages, and Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft alone now account for more than a fifth of the index's weight, a concentration level without modern precedent. The economic calendar was otherwise quiet; investors are now looking ahead to the start of third-quarter earnings season for confirmation that AI-driven spending is paying off.
