Iran war enters a rare lull. The US-Iran conflict, now in its seventh month, has hit its longest pause yet — American forces have not struck Iranian territory in ten straight operational periods, the quietest stretch since fighting resumed on July 7. A United Nations fact-finding mission reported this week that it found reasonable grounds to believe two US strikes, on a school in Minab and a sports complex in Lamerd, amounted to war crimes, citing more than 170 combined civilian deaths, many of them children. Iran's foreign minister said Tehran is "not interested in continuing the conflict" and is looking toward a diplomatic solution, while oil prices eased as Saudi Arabia began rerouting shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
ICE's top job stays open. The White House abruptly withdrew its nomination of former Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, offering no explanation. The move came after Senate Homeland Security Committee chairman Rand Paul held up a confirmation hearing, demanding answers about ICE's internal investigation into a string of officer-involved shootings, including two that killed American citizens in Minneapolis. ICE has gone without a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration.
Agent charged in Minneapolis shooting pleads not guilty. Christian Castro, the ICE agent charged in the January shooting of Venezuelan immigrant Julio Sosa-Celis in Minneapolis, pleaded not guilty Friday to six federal counts of lying to the FBI about the incident. A magistrate judge set his bond at $75,000 with home confinement and a mental-health evaluation; he already faces separate state assault charges, with bond set at $200,000 a day earlier. Surveillance footage later contradicted the Department of Homeland Security's initial account that Castro had been attacked with a broom and shovel before he opened fire through a closed door.
Hyundai raid workers seek accountability. About 200 South Korean nationals who were detained in last year's massive ICE raid at a Hyundai battery plant in Ellabell, Georgia, are pursuing claims against the federal government, alleging racial profiling, excessive force and unlawful arrest. Roughly 300 Korean workers were deported without charge after a deal between Washington and Seoul following the September 2025 raid, and video of some workers shackled at the wrists, ankles and waist sparked outrage in South Korea.
Judge blocks Education Department's DEI grant cuts. A federal judge in Boston struck down the Education Department's policy of canceling roughly $600 million in teacher-training grants over "DEI" content, ruling the administration never clearly defined what counted as DEI or weighed the impact on affected schools and educators. The ruling reverses ground the administration had gained after an earlier Supreme Court decision let the terminations proceed.
Pentagon revives testosterone testing. The Pentagon is moving ahead with mandatory testosterone screening for male service members age 30 and older, a program Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has promoted as a readiness measure. The Pentagon's own guidance acknowledges the evidence doesn't support testosterone therapy for boosting energy, physical performance or cognition, and outside medical experts have warned of fertility risks and questioned the program's broad scope.
