The selloff followed reports that the U.S. military struck five Iranian tankers after Iran fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. Navy warship, reigniting fears over the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude jumped 3.4% to top $100 a barrel for the first time since July, while West Texas Intermediate climbed to $95.39. Rising Treasury yields and weakness in European markets added to the pressure, with analysts warning the conflict has "brought the inflationary consequences of the conflict firmly back into focus."
Apple slipped 1.3% even after unveiling its new iPhone lineup, including a foldable model, at its first product event under new CEO John Ternus. Meta bucked the market's slide, surging 5.4% on the launch of Muse, a new AI personal assistant for daily tasks. Signet Jewelers jumped 10% on stronger-than-expected earnings and raised guidance, while Casey's General Stores tumbled 16.5% after disappointing same-store sales growth.
