Wall Street Retreats Ahead of the Fed

U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday as investors braced for the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision on Wednesday. The S&P 500 fell 0.45% to 7,585.73, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.63% (328.09 points) to 52,093.11, and the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.78% to 25,981.57. The small-cap Russell 2000 lost 0.76%.

Yields at 2007 Highs, Oil Surges

The pressure came from two directions at once. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to roughly 5.02% intraday, its highest level since 2007, as traders weighed whether the Fed will hold rates steady, cut, or even raise them at Wednesday's meeting. At the same time, oil prices jumped again — Brent crude traded near $107-108 a barrel — on continued Middle East tensions and a reported Saudi pipeline disruption, reviving inflation worries just as the Fed weighs its next move. Higher long-term yields hit richly valued growth and high-multiple names hardest, since future earnings are discounted more heavily when borrowing costs rise.

Movers: Chips Buck the Slide, Axon and Enova Tumble

Not every stock moved with the broader market. Skyworks Solutions jumped roughly 10% and Dell Technologies rose more than 5%, helping some chip and hardware names buck the day's slide even as the major indexes fell. On the downside, Enova International and Dave & Buster's each dropped double digits, and Axon Enterprise — the Taser and body-camera maker — was among the S&P 500's worst performers, falling sharply as its high valuation made it especially sensitive to the day's surge in yields. Separately, Wells Fargo trimmed its year-end S&P 500 target to 7,700, citing 5%-10% of near-term downside risk.

What's Next

All eyes now turn to Wednesday afternoon, when the Federal Reserve announces its rate decision. Markets have been divided on whether hot energy prices and firm inflation data will keep the Fed on hold, or whether slowing growth will still tip policymakers toward a cut.
