Orange County Local News Roundup

Santa Ana's mayor clings to a razor-thin lead. Mayor Valerie Amezcua, who won reelection in 2024 with nearly 60% of the vote, is now in one of Orange County's tightest races. After Friday evening's Registrar of Voters update, the police-union-backed incumbent led attorney Dan Shimell by only about 140 votes (roughly 43.4% to 43.15%), a margin that has shrunk from about 4,000 votes on election night. Amezcua declined to comment to reporters.

Tustin and Irvine races remain too close to call. In Tustin's mayoral race, former Mayor Letitia Clark held a 221-vote edge (about 50.6% to 49.4%) over incumbent Austin Lumbard with more than 18,000 ballots counted. In Irvine's District 1, incumbent Melinda Liu led OC Food Bank board member John Park by 142 votes (about 39.7% to 38.5%), with former Mayor Sukhee Kang third at about 21.8%. Mail-in ballots are still being counted countywide.

Landfill strike now slowing trash pickup. The weekslong Teamsters Local 952 strike by county landfill workers is reaching residents' curbs. Hauler CR&R, which serves cities including Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Orange, warned customers of delayed trash and recycling collection countywide, citing limited landfill access and longer travel times while contract talks with the county remain stalled.

Brea residents sue over Costco deal records. Local advocacy group Brea4All has filed a petition in Orange County Superior Court alleging the city violated the California Public Records Act by producing incomplete, out-of-order screenshots of text messages between Assistant City Manager Jason Killebrew and developer Dwight Manley about a planned Costco and gas station on Kraemer Boulevard. The group seeks the full records in native format plus legal costs.

Senior pets get $50 adoptions in November. For Adopt a Senior Pet Month, OC Animal Care in Tustin is charging just $50 to adopt dogs and cats five years and older through the end of November. Adoption fees are also waived for dogs 25 pounds and up, and all cats are $50 on "Whisker Wednesdays."
