Santa Ana's mayoral lead flips to a first-time candidate. In Saturday evening's ballot update, progressive-backed attorney Dan Shimell overtook police union-backed incumbent Mayor Valerie Amezcua, who had led by roughly 13 points on election night. Shimell now holds about 45% of the vote, up 1,823 votes, to Amezcua's 42%, with city commissioner Dwayne Shipp at about 13% of the 58,200 votes counted so far. The police union spent more than $110,000 backing Amezcua. If trends hold, Shimell would join a new progressive council majority, as three police union-backed council candidates are on track to lose; incumbent Phil Bacerra conceded Saturday night.
Jessie Lopez takes the lead in the 68th Assembly District. Santa Ana Councilwoman Jessie Lopez moved ahead of fellow Councilman David Penaloza for the first time since election night, 50.6% to 49.4% — a margin of more than 1,100 votes out of over 92,000 counted. The race has drawn heavy outside money: committees funded in part by tech companies such as Google and Meta spent more than $8.3 million supporting Penaloza, while labor-funded groups spent nearly $2.3 million supporting Lopez, as of Oct. 27.
Council and mayor races stay neck and neck across North and Central OC. In Westminster, Councilman Carlos Manzo led incumbent Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen by more than 500 votes (just over 40% to under 38%) after the lead first flipped on Thursday. The Registrar of Voters' next results update is expected Monday at 5 p.m.
