Democrats win control of Congress. A day after the midterm elections, NBC News projects that Democrats have taken majorities in both the House and the Senate, ending unified Republican control of Washington. NBC projects Democrats will start the new year with their largest House majority in nearly two decades. A handful of contests were still being counted Wednesday, including Alaska's Senate race between Mary Peltola and Sen. Dan Sullivan, and the Oregon governor's race had not been called as of early Wednesday morning.

A wave of Senate flips. Democrats picked up Republican-held seats across the map, according to NBC News projections: Democrat James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton in Texas, former Gov. Roy Cooper won in North Carolina, and former Sen. Sherrod Brown beat Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio. Democrats also held open seats, with Abdul El-Sayed projected to defeat Mike Rogers in Michigan (he would be the first Muslim U.S. senator), Rep. Chris Pappas defeating former Sen. John E. Sununu in New Hampshire, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan beating Michele Tafoya in Minnesota, and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton winning Illinois' seat being vacated by Dick Durbin.

Governors' races make history. In 36 gubernatorial contests, NBC News projected Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms as Georgia's first Black woman governor, Deb Haaland as New Mexico's first Native American woman governor, and Gina Hinojosa winning in Texas. In California, Xavier Becerra defeated Republican Steve Hilton. Republicans held Florida with Byron Donalds and Tennessee with Marsha Blackburn. NBC reports a record 17 states elected women as governor.

Trump reacts, points to Iran. President Trump wrote on Truth Social that he "wasn't on the Ballot" and would have won "in a landslide." He told The New York Times he was willing to accept the results, and told Fox News that "a part of it was Iran," apparently alluding to the U.S. conflict with Iran, which saw a U.S. strike on Iran's Qeshm Island on Tuesday. Elon Musk, who NBC notes spent roughly a quarter-billion dollars backing Republicans, joked on X about the outcome, while stock futures fell overnight.

Election-season threats and probes. A Georgia man who had been pardoned for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was arrested on charges of threatening federal judges, The New York Times reported. Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens requested U.S. Marshals protection after receiving death threats for endorsing Republican Mike Rogers, according to Axios, and the Justice Department sent letters to about 20 Democrats in connection with its investigation into candidate recruitment in Alaska's Senate race.
