Stephen Miller to replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff. President Trump said Friday that White House chief of staff Susie Wiles is being replaced by Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff and architect of many of the administration's hard-line immigration policies. Miller takes over on Monday, while Wiles, the nation's first female White House chief of staff, will stay on to handle political operations. The shake-up comes days after Republicans were swept out of power in the midterms. "Stephen's been with me since the beginning. He gets it," Trump told reporters.

Mississippi and Alaska Senate races still too close to call. Democrat Scott Colom's lead over Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi stood at roughly 2,000 votes as of Friday afternoon, but no one, not even the secretary of state's office, can say exactly how many provisional and late-arriving absentee ballots remain; mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive until Nov. 10, and the state has no recount provision. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola narrowly leads Sen. Dan Sullivan with about a quarter of ballots still uncounted. Wins in both would grow the Democratic caucus to 56 seats. Meanwhile, several incoming Democratic senators say they will not back Chuck Schumer as leader.

Federal judge halts construction of Trump's arch. District Judge Tanya Chutkan barred any construction for 14 days on the planned 250-foot arch at Memorial Circle, the traffic island between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Her order came less than two hours after the National Capital Planning Commission gave the project final approval in an 8-4 vote following nearly eight hours of public testimony. D.C. and Virginia had sued, arguing the arch needs congressional approval and would cause major traffic and financial disruption.

Hegseth vows to fight impeachment push. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the Iran war in a defiant video Thursday, called for at least $350 billion in additional military funding and vowed to fight impeachment. Outgoing Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has told Hegseth to resign or be removed, and a House vote on articles of impeachment could come as early as next week, with some Republicans now breaking with him after the election losses.

Newsom clears California's death row. Outgoing California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday he will grant clemency to everyone on the state's death row, the largest in the nation with more than 550 people. Their sentences become life without the possibility of parole. Newsom had placed a moratorium on executions in 2019.
