US News Roundup – October 27, 2026

Poll: Democrats keep a midterm edge, with warning signs. A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll of 1,289 registered voters, taken Oct. 19-20, finds Democrats still favored to win control of the House, but with indications that a potential wave could be limited — likely voters were slightly less likely than registered voters to disapprove of President Trump. Cost of living remains the top concern: a third of respondents reported financial hardship in the past year and 4 in 10 said their finances have worsened. Immigration was the biggest issue for self-described MAGA supporters, while preserving democracy resonated with Democrats and independents.

Judge blocks further changes to D.C.'s East Potomac golf course. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes issued a preliminary injunction barring the Trump administration from cutting or damaging trees at East Potomac Park without a court order and requiring at least 10 business days' notice before any closure or irreversible change, after the government cut down 430 trees with less than a day's notice. In a 70-page opinion, Reyes noted that the Justice Department had urged the court not to believe the president's own social media posts about renovation plans. Trump says the renovations will still begin next month.

U.S. to grant visas to Brazil's Flávio Bolsonaro. A senior administration official said Tuesday the State Department would issue visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family. The conservative Trump ally lost Sunday's Brazilian presidential runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by more than four million votes and has refused to concede; he faces investigations in Brazil including money-laundering and tax-evasion allegations, which he denies. He arrived near Miami early Wednesday after crossing into Argentina.

Polymarket says it has probed "dozens" of election bets. Polymarket's head of investigations, Shana Bautista, told NPR the prediction market has investigated dozens of midterm-related bets for possible insider trading or manipulation, and at least two cases have been referred to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as scrutiny of election betting grows ahead of Nov. 3.
