Meta ordered to pay New Mexico $25 billion. State District Judge Francis J. Mathew on Wednesday ordered Meta to pay $25 billion, the largest penalty ever imposed on Facebook's parent, after a Santa Fe jury found last month that the company committed more than 43 million violations of New Mexico's consumer-protection law by deceiving users about privacy. The case grew out of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. "Facebook promised users that they (the users) controlled their data. This was false," the judge wrote. Meta, which argued for no more than $3.4 billion, has said it will appeal; under the state constitution the money would go to education.
Supreme Court rebuffs Trump on care for transgender inmates. The justices on Wednesday refused to let the administration immediately enforce a Bureau of Prisons policy that would halt surgeries, taper off hormone therapy and end social accommodations for transgender prisoners. The brief, unsigned order leaves in place Judge Royce Lamberth's injunction while the lawsuit continues. Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas would have allowed the policy to take effect. About 600 inmates were receiving hormone therapy in 2025, according to court records.
Judge curbs DHS hunt for noncitizen voters in nine states. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin late Wednesday barred the Department of Homeland Security from conducting "elections-related field operations and field interviews" targeting people likely to be U.S. citizens in nine states, including California and New York, through Election Day. She found the door-knocking effort likely violates the Voting Rights Act's ban on voter intimidation and cited a "high likelihood of error" in DHS's target lists. The order is paused until 5 p.m. Friday to allow an appeal; DHS said it has "no plans to question or investigate people we believe to be U.S. citizens."
US and Israel reportedly plan new Iran strikes after the midterms. The New York Times reported that U.S. and Israeli military planners have drafted plans for a short but intensive round of strikes on Iran after the Nov. 3 midterm elections, potentially targeting energy sites, nuclear facilities and missile and drone arsenals. The report said there is a small chance President Trump could authorize action sooner, or decide against it altogether. Chemical tank blast forces evacuations in Toledo. A tank holding glycidyl methacrylate exploded and leaked in Toledo, Ohio, prompting the city to evacuate more than 900 residents within a one-mile radius and order people within three miles to shelter in place. A sheriff's deputy was injured. The mayor warned the tank, which can hold 5,500 gallons, could still be explosive, and officials allowed the plume to vent while the EPA monitored the air; the EPA has since attributed the release to an "error."
Punches fly at Trump's South Carolina rally. President Trump rallied Wednesday at Clemson University for Sen.
