The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate unchanged on Wednesday, at a range of 3.75%–4.00%, one month after delivering its first rate hike in three years. Two policymakers — Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack — dissented in favor of another quarter-point increase. In its statement the Fed said "inflation remains elevated"; consumer prices rose 3.7% in September from a year earlier, well above the 2% target. Chair Kevin Warsh's Fed left its next step open, though futures markets are pricing in a December hike. The decision came six days before midterm elections dominated by affordability concerns, with 30-year mortgage rates near a three-year high.
Labor and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta has died at her home at age 96, her family said through her Bakersfield-based foundation. Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers union to improve conditions in the nation's fields and coined the rallying cry "Sí, se puede!" ("Yes, it can be done"). She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 and kept marching and speaking on labor, women's and civil rights well into her 90s.
The Trump administration moved to dramatically scale back a 2023 rule curbing methane emissions from oil and gas drilling sites. President Trump announced the proposal at a campaign stop in Lubbock, Texas, saying it would save the industry billions and spur more drilling as Republicans face voter frustration over fuel prices. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin called the Biden rule destructive, and the American Petroleum Institute welcomed the change. Environmental groups countered that capturing methane — which is natural gas — leaves companies with more product to sell, offsetting compliance costs.
In an unsigned order, the Supreme Court refused a request from Baltimore; Columbus, Ohio; and New Haven, Connecticut, to restore a Biden-era rule that let immigration judges temporarily pause some deportation cases. The practice, known as administrative closure, had been used to shield asylum seekers and others awaiting relief; Texas sued over the policy in June, and the Trump administration and Texas had reached an agreement ending it.
More than 29,000 state and local officers have been deputized under ICE's 287(g) program since January 2025 — more than double the count eight months ago and far above ICE's own 11,600 deportation officers, according to a new FWD.us analysis. Florida and Texas agencies accounted for about half of the 47,000-plus 287(g) arrests through August. Separately, 43-year-old Guatemalan national Roberto Jimenez Gutierrez was found unresponsive at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, at least the 61st death in ICE custody during Trump's second term.
Dr. Jennifer Shuford, deputy director and chief medical officer of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced her resignation after just four months on the job. The former Texas health commissioner was appointed by President Trump in April. Her departure adds to leadership turnover at an agency that has lost about a third of its workforce amid an ongoing U.S. measles outbreak.
