Mississippi and Alaska Senate races still undecided four days after the election. Democrats now hold 54 Senate seats to the GOP's 44, with two contests uncalled. In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by 2,574 votes (49.1% to 48.8%) with 97% counted; about 3,139 mail ballots remain outstanding and count if they arrive by Nov. 10, and state law provides no recount for the race. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola leads Sen. Dan Sullivan by 637 votes with 74% counted; if neither tops 50%, ranked-choice tabulation begins Nov. 18. In the House, Democrats held 254 seats to 162 as of Saturday morning with 19 races uncalled, and their national House popular-vote lead has grown to nearly 13 points. Retired Navy admiral Nancy Lacore flipped South Carolina's 1st District, and in Colorado's 4th District Rep. Lauren Boebert trails Democrat Eileen Laubacher by about 3,200 votes.

Hegseth under fire as Miller's promotion draws GOP criticism. President Trump said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is "doing a very good job" and that he isn't considering replacing him, even as Republicans who blame the Iran war for their midterm losses push back. Sen. Thom Tillis said Hegseth faces "a reckoning," and House Oversight Chair James Comer said there are "a lot of questions" about him. The Wall Street Journal reported that Hegseth and CENTCOM chief Adm. Brad Cooper have backed restarting major combat operations against Iran, while Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff favor diplomacy. Separately, Stephen Miller's promotion to White House chief of staff — he starts Monday — drew sharp criticism from Democrats and from some Republicans, including Rep. Marlin Stutzman, who called it a "horrible decision."

Tesla to end Cybertruck production. Elon Musk announced on X that Cybertruck production will "wind down" around mid-2027 at Tesla's plant outside Austin, Texas, freeing capacity for its Cybercab robotaxi. Musk once forecast 250,000 Cybertrucks a year; Kelley Blue Book estimates Tesla sold about 20,237 last year, and sales through September were down another 28%.

US measles cases hit a 35-year high. The CDC reported 5,182 confirmed measles cases so far in 2026 — the most since 1991 and more than double 2025's total of 2,289. Children and teenagers account for about 59% of cases, and kindergarten vaccination coverage has fallen to 92.4%. The CDC counts four deaths, fewer than state officials report; Pennsylvania alone reports six deaths and 1,487 cases.

Former Sen. Jay Rockefeller dies at 89. John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV, the great-grandson of the Standard Oil founder who came to West Virginia in 1964 as an anti-poverty volunteer, died Thursday night at his home in Washington. He served two terms as West Virginia's governor and 30 years in the US Senate, where he championed health care and served on the intelligence committee, before retiring in 2015.
