Erie mass shooting leaves eight dead. A gunman killed eight people, including a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a pregnant woman, on Perry Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening before dying of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police Chief Richard Lorah said the shooter was related to seven of the eight victims and that all of the deaths occurred before officers arrived; it is "too soon to talk about motive." Gov. Josh Shapiro expressed grief for the family and the community.
Judge orders taxpayer-funded Trump ads off the air. U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon in New York on Sunday night granted a two-week temporary restraining order requiring the administration to cancel promotional TV ads paid for with about $20 million in Homeland Security funds. The ads, airing since late September, promote the president and his midterm message. The challenge was brought by a coalition including Common Cause, represented by Democracy Forward; the DNC has filed a separate suit. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the ads "shouldn't be paid for with taxpayer dollars."
DOJ opens antitrust probe of TV networks over pool boycott. The Justice Department's Antitrust Division is investigating whether ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC violated the Sherman Act by jointly suspending pool coverage of President Trump in September, after the White House pulled credentials from CNN, MSNOW and Politico journalists. A DOJ spokesperson said "group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act"; the networks said no administration should reject a news organization because it objects to its reporting.
Bipartisan senators demand Trump reverse Russian diesel deal. Six senators — Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and John Curtis and Democrats Jeanne Shaheen and Richard Blumenthal — said Sunday that the president's newly announced deal to import Russian diesel runs counter to the 2022 law banning Russian energy imports and was made without consulting Congress. Trump said Russia would ship more than 300,000 tons immediately, rising to millions of tons later, as U.S. fuel prices remain high; energy experts doubt it will noticeably lower pump prices.
White House sets Nov. 5 hearing on Fed Governor Lisa Cook. A three-member White House committee — economic adviser Kevin Hassett, acting Office of Government Ethics Director Keith Sonderling and EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas — will hold a closed-door hearing on mortgage-fraud allegations against Cook and recommend whether there are grounds to remove her. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in June that she could not be fired without notice and a chance to respond. Cook denies wrongdoing, and her attorneys have questioned whether the process will be fair.
