Isaias leaves at least four dead and hundreds of thousands in the dark. Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, around 8 p.m. ET Friday as a Category 2 storm after briefly reaching Category 3 strength, then weakened to a post-tropical cyclone within hours. At least four deaths were reported, two in Alabama and two in Florida, including a man found in a garage with a running generator. More than 700,000 customers across seven Southeastern states were without power Saturday afternoon, mostly in Florida and Alabama. Federal emergency declarations now cover Florida, Alabama and Georgia. With up to 15 inches of rain possible in spots, Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that "the flooding story is not over."

Trump names Katie Zacharia White House press secretary. President Trump picked Katie Zacharia, a California conservative commentator who briefly served as a Homeland Security spokesperson this year and now advises Truth Social on communications, to succeed Karoline Leavitt, who left the post in late August. The White House briefing room has not hosted a press briefing since September 3.

DOJ loosens political-activity limits for top appointees. A new Justice Department memo from Assistant Attorney General Jolene Ann Laurie lets Senate-confirmed appointees, including the attorney general, FBI director and U.S. attorneys, speak at rallies, canvass and serve as party delegates in a personal capacity. It reverses a 2024 policy that barred such appearances. Attorney General Todd Blanche has drawn criticism for campaign appearances this fall; he says he broke no rule.

Justice Department stops enforcing key parts of the 1934 gun law. Following an August ruling by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix in Texas, the DOJ and ATF said they will no longer require federal approval to make or transfer short-barreled rifles and shotguns, suppressors and similar items under the National Firearms Act. The judge reasoned that once Congress eliminated the $200 tax on these items, the law could no longer rest on the taxing power. The administration chose not to appeal. State and local laws still apply.

Americans over 75 are now the wealthiest age group. The Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances found that households headed by someone 75 or older had the highest median net worth of any age group in 2025, at $504,000. Households under 35 saw median net worth fall 23% to $33,000. About one in five households was behind on debt payments, up 7 percentage points since 2022.
