An Extreme Heat Warning covers all of Orange County through 8 p.m. Thursday, October 8, the National Weather Service said, with inland areas such as Irvine, Santa Ana, Anaheim and Mission Viejo expected to reach the mid-90s to 102°F and coastal cities like Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa climbing into the 90s, with overnight lows staying in the 70s. A Wind Advisory also takes effect Saturday for southeastern Orange County valleys, with gusts up to 40 mph possible.
Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken said Friday she has an alcohol problem and checked into the Betty Ford Center in June 2025, in a social media post responding to a legal claim from her former chief of staff, Berenice Ballinas, that accuses the mayor of heavy drinking at government functions and inappropriate workplace conduct. Aitken denied the claim's more serious allegations while acknowledging her struggles with alcohol, and several council members have since called for an independent investigation. The city says that inquiry is expected to take months; Aitken is running for re-election next month.
The Orange City Council gave first-round approval to an ordinance lowering speed limits by 5 to 10 mph on 47 street segments, including stretches of Glassell Street, Chapman Avenue and Esplanade Street near the accident-prone Orange Circle. The move follows a state law giving cities more flexibility to set speed limits and comes after similar reductions already made in Anaheim and Irvine; a final vote is still required before the new limits take effect.
The Orange County Transportation Authority declared a state of emergency for the coastal rail line in San Clemente, authorizing its CEO to fast-track protection work as erosion continues to threaten the tracks ahead of an expected strong El Niño season. The declaration clears the way for roughly 690,000 cubic yards of sand to be placed along the shoreline to shore up the rail corridor.
