Orange County News – October 8, 2026

County Teamsters threaten to strike next week. About 450 Orange County workers represented by Teamsters Local 952 — the crews who maintain roads, parks, landfills and the animal shelter, plus custodians and the mechanics who service sheriff's vehicles — say they will strike as early as Tuesday unless the county brings a new contract to the table. Talks have stalled for months, and on Oct. 6 the state Public Employment Relations Board issued a letter finding the county negotiated in bad faith, citing evasive and delaying tactics, a lack of counterproposals, and threatened layoffs if the unit got raises. Members rejected the county's one-year, 3% raise offer largely because it came after the June contract expiration and carried no back pay. A county spokesperson said contingency plans are in place to keep essential services running; the county must respond to the state board by Oct. 26.

County takes over Be Well OC mental health campuses. Orange County is ending its partnership with the nonprofit Mind OC and will take over operations of the Be Well OC campuses — the Orange facility off the 57 Freeway that opened in 2021, and an Irvine facility that was built but never opened. The settlement, signed Oct. 5, closes out dueling lawsuits over the ground lease and follows a 2024 county audit that flagged billing problems. Mind OC keeps a contested pot of about $2.1 million, and the county agreed not to open new audits into the nonprofit. The handover is expected to take roughly 90 days. The county put more than $16 million into building the Orange site.

Big money flows into the coastal 72nd Assembly District race. Democrats are spending heavily to flip the long-held Republican seat that stretches along the coast from Seal Beach to Laguna Beach and is being vacated by Assemblywoman Diane Dixon, who is running for county supervisor. Democratic-backed Chris Kluwe, a former Minnesota Vikings punter, has reported more than $1.1 million in fundraising, including over $652,000 from the state Democratic Party. Republican Gracey Van Der Mark, a Huntington Beach councilwoman, has raised about $314,000, while a Republican-aligned PAC has spent more than $158,000 on ads attacking Kluwe. Kluwe led the primary with just under 44%, though Republican candidates combined took more than 54%.

Passenger steals airport tug at John Wayne Airport. A 26-year-old Washington man waiting for a Delta flight to Seattle opened an emergency exit door in Terminal B Tuesday evening, stole an Alaska Airlines tug used to tow jets, crashed it into another vehicle, and then tried to take an American Airlines lavatory truck before airport police stopped him. He was hospitalized for crash injuries and booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of trespassing, vehicle theft and vandalism. The airport said the incident caused only a brief operational delay.
