Newport Beach cancels its court-ordered special election. City officials announced Friday that the special election an OC Superior Court judge ordered for Nov. 3 is cancelled, saying the city's ballot printer never received required authorization from the California Secretary of State, nor the watermark and color tint needed for ballot integrity. Judge Julianne Bancroft had ordered the separate ballot after finding the city's legal challenges to three developer-backed initiatives — on city hall transparency, council term limits and district elections — could amount to obstruction. The regular county ballot, including four council races and the housing-focused Measure H, is unaffected.
County Teamsters pause strike and return to bargaining. Teamsters Local 952 paused its strike as the union went back to the negotiating table with the Board of Supervisors on Friday, after more than 400 county employees picketed for better wages and back pay, affecting services such as landfills and the animal shelter. County lawyers had filed a labor complaint alleging picketers blocked landfill roads and cut trash deliveries to one landfill by roughly 75%.
San Clemente looks to expand its community amphitheater. City leaders are weighing an expansion of the small amphitheater at Forster Ranch Community Park that could seat up to 600 people for community productions and live music, favoring it over an undeveloped site at Steed Park. A partnership with Capistrano Unified School District could add a security fence and school access. The council is expected to revisit the plan on Nov. 10.
OC Animal Care's longest residents still waiting for homes. Of nearly 300 adoptable animals at OC Animal Care in Tustin, several — mostly pit bulls and huskies — have waited more than a year. Adoption fees are waived all October for dogs 25 pounds and up, and the shelter held a reduced-fee adoption event for small dogs, puppies, cats and kittens on Oct. 24.
