King tides flood the Balboa Peninsula again. Monday morning's high tide in Newport Beach reached about 8.3 feet, more than a foot above predictions. Water pushed in from the bay side of the Balboa Peninsula past stacked sandbags and flooded streets, homes and businesses, with the Balboa Fun Zone hit hardest. It was the peninsula's second flood in two weeks. Business owners near the Fun Zone said the water went from barely there at 8:30 a.m. to a lake by 9 a.m. City crews reinforced breached sandbags along the ferry dock wall with tarps, and workers are building a large sand wall at The Wedge. Newport Beach declared a local emergency last week. Forecasters expect an 8.5-foot tide on Tuesday, and the National Weather Service says Monday through Wednesday could bring the highest tides on record. A coastal flood warning covers the Orange County coast until 1 p.m. Thursday. In Long Beach, water also topped sand berms at Bayshore Beach and flooded homes along 54th Place.
Metrolink suspends south Orange County service through Friday. Because of the high tides, Metrolink's Orange County Line will not run between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside from Monday, Oct. 26, through Friday, Oct. 30. Trains will run only between Los Angeles Union Station and Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, and there are no replacement buses. In September, waves overtopped the beachfront tracks near San Clemente and damaged the slope, halting rail service while crews made emergency repairs. Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains are expected to keep running while conditions are safe. Riders should check metrolinktrains.com and pacificsurfliner.com for updates.
