Father Junípero Serra refounded the mission on All Saints' Day in 1776 after an earlier attempt was abandoned during the Kumeyaay revolt in San Diego. Its Great Stone Church, finished in 1806, collapsed in the 1812 earthquake, killing 40 Native American worshippers, and the Serra Chapel remains the only standing California chapel where Serra is known to have celebrated Mass. The Register's anniversary look-back also notes the mission's deep ties to the Acjachemen Nation and the steep decline of the coastal Native population during the mission era.
Huntington Beach will appeal the state audit of its Pacific Airshow settlement. After a closed session on Friday, the City Council voted unanimously to appeal a Superior Court ruling that lets State Auditor Grant Parks review the city's 2023 settlement with the Pacific Airshow's operators. That deal paid the operator $4.9 million for losses tied to the oil-spill-shortened 2021 show and could give it exclusive rights to the event for up to 40 years. City Attorney Mike Vigliotta said the trial court made "reversible errors," while Judge Carmen Luege had ruled in July that the city could not refuse to comply with the audit on confidentiality grounds.
Newport Beach's historic Balboa Theater is sold, with restoration planned. The 1928 theater on the Balboa Peninsula, which opened as the Ritz Theater and went dark in 1991 after years of cult-film midnight screenings, has a new owner. A local real estate investor plans to restore the 707 E. Balboa Blvd. property as an entertainment and cultural venue, and a deed restriction requires it to stay connected to the performing arts. The price was not disclosed. The deal follows the 2024 reopening of Newport's restored Lido Theater.
Dana Point's Ritz-Carlton changes hands for an estimated $600 million. Denver-based KSL Capital Partners has bought the 373-room Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, which sits on the bluffs above Salt Creek Beach. The price was not disclosed, but Atlas Hospitality estimates it at about $600 million. The sale is part of the Chinese government-controlled insurer's unwinding of the Strategic Hotels portfolio. KSL once owned the resort across Pacific Coast Highway, now the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach.
