Orange County News – October 29, 2026

Teamsters resume the county strike as talks continue. Teamsters representing Orange County waste and public works employees resumed their strike Thursday after the county stood by its "last, best and final" offer, which exceeds the cost-of-living adjustment, adds a couple of holidays and runs one year through August. The union had paused picketing as an "olive branch of good faith" so haulers could use the county's three landfills. Supervisor Don Wagner called the county's offer "very generous" and said a deal was "kind of close," while Board Chairman Doug Chaffee said the union has not put a counteroffer in writing. The county has also filed a complaint with the Public Employment Relations Board alleging picketers blocked traffic; the Teamsters deny it. Supervisors could take up any mediated deal at their regular meeting Tuesday.

Calvert and Kim clash in the redrawn 40th District. Two Republican incumbents, Rep. Ken Calvert of Corona and Rep. Young Kim of Anaheim, are in a bitter race for California's reshaped 40th Congressional District, which takes in metropolitan eastern Orange County plus Temescal Valley, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake and Menifee in Riverside County. The lines were redrawn under Proposition 50, approved by voters in November 2025. The campaigns have traded ethics attacks over past donations, federal grant work and financial disclosures. Kim is campaigning on living costs, while Calvert stresses his seniority, transportation funding and immigration enforcement. Election Day is November 3.

Registrar details election security ahead of Tuesday. State emergency services director Caroline Thomas Jacobs toured the Orange County Registrar of Voters in Santa Ana with Registrar Bob Page, who described GPS-tracked two-person ballot pickup teams, new signature-verification software funded by a $3.2 million state grant, sealed voter rolls and counting computers that are not connected to the internet. About 380,000 ballots had been returned as of Tuesday, ahead of the 2022 midterm pace. Page said officials will demand a judge-signed warrant if federal agents seek to seize ballots. Results cannot be certified until November 25.
