Orange County News – October 28, 2026

High tides flood Sunset Beach and Newport again. Another round of record high tides hit the Orange County coast Tuesday. In Sunset Beach, water started rising around 9:30 a.m. and got past sandbags into many garages and homes, leaving residents to clean up all day. Newport Beach streets flooded again too. The National Weather Service has a coastal flood warning for the OC coastline through 1 p.m. Thursday and expects more very high morning tides until then. AAA says drivers whose cars sat in saltwater should get them inspected soon, because corrosion and electrical damage can show up weeks later. Forecasters expect even higher tides in November and December as El Niño strengthens.

Residents near the Prima Deshecha Landfill raise air-quality alarms. People living near the county landfill in the hills between San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente say dust and debris have gotten worse since blasting for an expansion began. They report dust coating their homes, pools and air filters, breathing problems, muddy streets and debris on La Pata. OC Waste & Recycling says three water trucks spray about 200,000 gallons a day to keep dust down, and it is looking at permanent misting systems. A proposal to raise the landfill's daily cap from 4,000 to 8,000 tons is on hold after resident complaints. The site now takes about 2,600 tons a day, and it will take more trash once Brea's Olinda Alpha Landfill closes, expected by 2036. Residents want independent air monitoring before any increase. Both Fifth District supervisor candidates say the county needs to do more.

Anaheim couple sentenced for wildlife trafficking. Linh Luu and Kevin Le, a married couple from Anaheim, were sentenced in federal court in Eugene, Oregon, to three years' probation and a $10,000 fine. Both pleaded guilty to violating the Lacey Act. Prosecutors say that from 2019 to 2021 the couple processed about $51,100 in payments to help a contact in Vietnam move protected wildlife parts to and from Oregon. The parts included bear gallbladders, lion teeth, a tiger pelt and rhinoceros horn. In December 2020 they took $12,000 in cash from an undercover federal agent as a down payment on a piece of rhino horn.
