Orange County News – October 21, 2026

Irvine candidates embrace an independent city auditor. With Irvine on pace for an estimated $37 million structural budget deficit within two years, several City Council candidates at a weekend forum — hosted by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, Irvine Watchdog and nearly a dozen local nonprofits — backed creating an independent auditor to get a better handle on city finances. The budget gap dominated the forum, with most candidates calling it their top priority; the future of Oak Creek Golf Club and the balance between open space and new housing also drew attention.

OC prosecutors must purge large parts of their DNA database. A legal settlement with UCI criminology professor emeritus William Thompson, who sued five years ago alleging the program invited unconstitutional arrests, forces Orange County to throw out large chunks of its "Spit and Acquit" DNA database. Started in 2007, the program let misdemeanor defendants avoid charges by paying a small fee and giving a DNA sample; it held nearly 215,000 profiles as of January 2025. Under the deal, DNA tied to a list of minor misdemeanors will be automatically expunged after 15 years, others can petition for removal after 25 years without reoffending, and District Attorney Todd Spitzer must publish new transparency data. Prosecutors had already quietly suspended collection for at least a year.

Supervisor candidates spar over herbicides in county creeks. Asked by Voice of OC about the county's use of glyphosate-based herbicides in creek beds — an issue raised by activist group Creek Team — 5th District candidate Assemblywoman Diane Dixon said she opposes the spraying and accused Supervisor Katrina Foley of voting to keep funding the contracts. Foley countered that she fought to stop the spraying and cancel the contracts, and that her complaint led to contractor penalties.

OC 검찰, 'Spit and Acquit' DNA 데이터베이스 대폭 삭제.
