The Norte Fire in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano was 80% contained at about 570 acres as of Monday afternoon, October 19, according to Cal Fire, as weakening Santa Ana winds helped crews across Southern California gain ground. Six homes in San Juan Capistrano were damaged or destroyed, all evacuation orders were lifted Saturday, and the cause remains under investigation. Crews are restoring the burn area to limit erosion ahead of rain forecast later this week.
The Irvine City Council canceled CicloIrvine, the city's annual car-free streets day, saving an estimated $677,000 a year, and asked staff to review all upcoming city events for cuts. The city must save about $37 million by July 2028 under its "Target '28" plan — $27 million in spending cuts and $10 million in new revenue — and is shrinking its workforce mainly by leaving vacancies unfilled. "We became too wide and too tall too quickly," City Manager Sean Joyce said.
As of Oct. 14, 92 dogs and 163 cats were waiting for adoption at OC Animal Care in Tustin, where kennel staff are among roughly 400 county workers on strike over stalled contract talks.
