Orange County News – October 3, 2026

Record-Breaking Heat. Orange County shattered decades-old heat records Saturday as a scorching weekend hit Southern California. Newport Beach hit 94°F, breaking the 91°F record set in 1958, while Santa Ana soared to 107°F, smashing the 102°F mark from 2014. The National Weather Service's Extreme Heat Warning for the OC coast remains in effect through Thursday evening, Oct. 8.

Ballots Hit the Mail. Nearly 2 million ballots left the Orange County Registrar of Voters' office in Santa Ana early Saturday, bound for USPS trucks ahead of Monday's official mailing for the Nov. 3 general election. Local voters will also decide several city measures, including Irvine's Measure D on how the City Council is elected, Orange's Measure K on becoming a charter city, and Westminster's Measure O on raising its hotel tax.

A New Day Honoring Civil Rights History. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill from Westminster Assemblymember Tri Ta establishing April 14 as "Sylvia Mendez Day" in California, honoring Mendez and her family's landmark fight to end school segregation that began in Orange County. A Westminster park already bears the Mendez family's name, commemorating the case that preceded Brown v. Board of Education.

Tustin Celebrates Community Heritage. Tustin Tiller Days, the city's beloved three-day carnival and parade, kicked off Friday at Columbus Tustin Park and continues through Sunday. Saturday's parade wound through Old Town Tustin despite the heat, with the weekend's events wrapping up with a Kids Say the Cutest Things Contest and a Backyard Brewfest.
