Irvine Police detectives announced Wednesday that Juan Carlos Amaya, 25, of Baldwin Park, was arrested October 1 and booked at Orange County Jail after a July encounter at an Irvine park with a 13-year-old who contacted him on Snapchat; Amaya had posed as 17, the department said. The Orange County District Attorney's Office filed four felony charges, including lewd act upon a child under 14, using a minor for sex acts, possession of child pornography, and contacting a child with intent to commit a specified crime. Detectives said Amaya had also messaged other minors on Snapchat and are concerned there may be more victims. Irvine fugitive extradited from Peru to face 11 cases. Erick Grant Rustad, 44, of Irvine, was escorted from Peru to LAX on Tuesday evening by FBI agents, turned over to Irvine Police, and booked into Orange County Jail, the Orange County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday. Rustad fled after posting $100,000 bail following an April 2025 arrest on suspicion of felony fentanyl possession with priors; he had eleven open Orange County cases and was out on bail on two felonies when he left for Mexico and then Peru. Prosecutors say Irvine Police searches of his home and vehicle in 2023 recovered identity documents and personal data linked to 14 victims, and later cases alleged drug sales, theft, and related crimes. He faces a combined maximum of 29 years and 6 months if convicted on all charges. OCDA said he is the ninth international fugitive returned to Orange County since January.
Heat advisory begins Thursday; all city facilities are cooling centers. A Heat Advisory takes effect Thursday, October 15, at 10 a.m. and runs through Saturday, October 17, at 8 p.m., the City of Irvine reiterated. All City of Irvine facilities are designated cooling centers for residents and pets. Officials urge residents to drink water regularly, wear light clothing, limit outdoor exertion in the heat of the day, never leave children or pets in vehicles, and check on neighbors at higher risk. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—seek help immediately for confusion, hot dry skin, or an extremely high body temperature. Cooling-center hours and pet rules are posted at cityofirvine.gov.
