Santa Ana winds bring Norte Fire smoke and a freeway rollover. Smoke from the wind-driven Norte Fire, which broke out around 11:30 a.m. Friday near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente and spread toward San Juan Capistrano, was visible across Irvine on Friday afternoon; Irvine Unified School District said authorities reported no danger to Irvine and that schools would adjust outdoor activities if air quality changed. As of Friday evening, the fire had burned about 465 acres with 0% containment and at least six homes burned, Orange County Fire Authority Chief T.J. McGovern said; two firefighters were injured, no residents were hurt, and evacuation orders covered San Juan Capistrano Zones 4, 5, and 10 and San Clemente Zones 12 and 13. South Coast AQMD issued a smoke advisory through 10 a.m. Saturday, forecasting unhealthy-for-sensitive-groups air in parts of South Orange County overnight. Earlier Friday morning, an overturned semi spilled what appeared to be gravel on the northbound 5 Freeway at Jamboree Road in Irvine, blocking every lane except the HOV lane during the Santa Ana wind event; ABC7 reported all lanes reopened by 9 a.m.

Tustin woman, 83, killed in Harvard Avenue crash; driver arrested on suspicion of DUI. Irvine police and OCFA responded Thursday, October 15, at 9:06 p.m. to a two-vehicle collision at Harvard Avenue and Paseo Westpark involving a 2009 Toyota Corolla and a 2023 Mercedes S680, the Irvine Police Department said. The Toyota’s driver, 83-year-old Effat Setayeshgar Tinoosh of Tustin, was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, where she died; an Irvine police spokesperson told KTLA that firefighters had to free her from the wreckage. The Mercedes driver, Adam Gabriel Canchola, 28, of La Quinta, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, and additional charges may follow. The department’s Major Accident Investigation Team asks witnesses to contact Detective Gallegos at Hgallegos@cityofirvine.org.

Council adopts grocery worker retention ordinance. The Irvine City Council on Tuesday, October 13, gave final approval to a Grocery Worker Retention Ordinance that requires a new owner to keep existing grocery workers for 90 days after a sale and allows terminations during that period only for just cause, the Orange County Register and UFCW Local 324 reported. Modeled on a 2015 state law that covers only stores larger than 15,000 square feet, the city measure extends protections to smaller-format stores such as Mother’s Market & Kitchen, whose owner has put the 12-store chain up for sale. Mayor Larry Agran and Councilmembers Kathleen Treseder, who introduced it, Betty Martinez Franco, William Go, and Melinda Liu supported the ordinance; Vice Mayor James Mai and Councilmember Mike Carroll opposed it. It is expected to take effect November 12.

The city’s Heat Advisory runs through Saturday at 8 p.m., with all city facilities open as cooling centers, and red flag warnings remain in effect through Saturday, with cooler weather and a chance of light rain expected in the days after, according to the National Weather Service as reported by LAist.
