IUSD and UCI join the Great California ShakeOut. Irvine Unified School District schools practiced Drop, Cover, and Hold On on Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m. as part of statewide earthquake preparedness, IUSD said. UC Irvine scheduled a separate campuswide drill at 10:45 a.m., with a zotALERT text, classroom beacons, and desktop notifications; the university stressed it was not an evacuation drill and asked people to stay inside buildings. UCI also tested ZotRadio AM 1690, emergency traffic-light beacons, and outdoor loudspeakers. Families were reminded to keep Parent Portal contacts current and to rely on email, text, iusd.org, and district social channels in a real emergency.
Heat Advisory in effect through Saturday; cooling centers open. A Heat Advisory that began Thursday at 10 a.m. continues through Saturday, October 17, at 8 p.m., the City of Irvine confirmed. All City of Irvine facilities are designated cooling centers for residents and pets. Officials urge residents to drink water regularly, wear light clothing, limit midday outdoor exertion, never leave children or pets in vehicles, and check on neighbors at higher risk. Heat stroke—confusion, hot dry skin, or an extremely high body temperature—is a medical emergency. Cooling-center hours and pet rules are posted at cityofirvine.gov.
Free Electrify Irvine workshop at Quail Hill tonight. OC Goes Solar and the City of Irvine hosted a free home-electrification workshop Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Quail Hill Community Center, 39 Shady Canyon Drive. Home Energy Academy founder Spencer Rosen was scheduled to cover heat-pump HVAC and water heaters, common cost myths, panel upgrades, GoGreen Financing’s 0% options for income-qualified households, and how to request free quotes from community-screened 2026 program installers. Complimentary snacks were provided.
Community notes and the week ahead. Frank R. Bowerman Landfill remains open amid the Teamsters Local 952 strike, but delays are possible and public compost pickup, asphalt delivery, and soil delivery stay unavailable; the city’s October 17 compost event remains canceled. Ballots for the November 3 General Municipal Election—mayor, Districts 1, 5, and 6 council seats, and Measure D on ranked-choice voting after January 1, 2028—are already in the mail; voter registration closes October 19 at ocvote.gov. Friday, October 16, Irvine Public Library offers Teen Campfire Stories at Bommer Canyon Preserve from 6 to 7 p.m. for ages 13 and up (registration required), and a get-out-the-vote rally is planned at Culver and Harvard from 4 to 5 p.m.
IUSD·UCI, Great California ShakeOut 참여. Drop, Cover, and Hold On
